J.C. Spivey, Jr., Lt. Col. US Army, Ret., age 85 of Arlington, VA and formerly of Carthage died Saturday, (March 24, 2018) in Arlington.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Friday (April 6, 2018) at Putnam Friends Church Cemetery. Everyone is invited to the Sinclair House in Carthage following the service for a meal and time of fellowship.
Born in Lee County he was a son of the late John Calvin and Sadie Brady Spivey. J.C. grew up in the Putnam community of Carthage. He left home and joined the Army when he was 17 and served 23 years retiring as Lieutenant Colonel.
He served during the Korean war where he supported the Marines with the invasion of Inchon in September of 1950. As an enlisted non-com he participated in the nuclear testing at Yucca Flats, AZ.
J.C. graduated from Officer’s Candidate School in Ft. Benning, GA in September of 1955, and attended Command and General Staff College in 1969-70. He was assigned to the Security Agency Materials Support Command at Arlington, Hall. In addition to Korea he served as an NCO, NATO, Vietnam, Indochina, Germany, and Turkey.
He retired from the service in 1972. During his retirement years he obtained a pilot’s license, traveled to over 195 countries including the Arctic and Antarctic. He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club; a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and did escort duty as a member of the Auxiliary at the Virginia Hospital Center. He participated in the Army’s program to assist new retires. His great sport was tennis.
He leaves behind his sister, Maxine Tippett, his brother Lendon Spivey; and many beloved nieces, nephews.
